One Way Ministries
Investor's Report 2010
I wanted to communicate a little of what has been happening around One Way Ministries in the last year.
Leader-to-Leader: This program gives a leader in business or ministry an opportunity to present, to a group of about 10 strategic thinkers and discerners, a problem or opportunity that they are wrestling with. We spend an afternoon together in a structured facilitated environment. The result is that the presenting leader comes away with some very specific ideas on where to go with their issue. The presenting leader picks a mentor from the group and has to report back to the whole team in 6 months to a year on what has been implemented, or what strategy they've adopted based on this experience.
These sessions have been richly rewarding for all. The Lord empowers us as we try to discern what the real issues are. Jan Kupecz, Canadian National Christian Foundation, and Doug Sprunt, Salem Storehouse, have done a terrific job in facilitating these. The feedback from some of the participants is over the top. We have a list of approximately 40 people who are willing to volunteer their time in order to serve the presenting leaders. Gerry Organ has also facilitated a similar event in Toronto.
If you know of someone who you think might benefit from a Leader-to-Leader experience, let us know.
Together: This year we launched our "together" experience. This experience closely resembles our inSPIRE program that Donna Lamothe pioneered for us about 3 years ago.
My wife, Tracy, and I facilitate this group of 10 leadership couples. We started off in June at Mont Tremblant where these couples began to open their hearts to each other. The experience is designed to provide a safe community where leadership couples can explore the deeper issues in their lives. Among other things the group gets to examine the health of their marriage, their walk with the Lord, their physical health and fitness and personal finances. We gather the group about once a quarter. In November we introduced them to Duane Jones who is an Olympic-level coach and nutritionist. Each of the couples, for the next year, has the opportunity to meet with him monthly as he tailors a fitness program for them and follows up with them.
WM2M: One of our ministry tracks is called WM2M - Women Married to the Minister. The desire to invest and support the lives of these women has been with One Way for many years now. In our experience, these ladies have it tough. Our heart has gone out to them and we seek to encourage them. This last year has been no different. We continue to host Bible studies where some pretty close relationships develop. We also had the pleasure of hosting a spa day back in the spring. By the end of the day we had seen and pampered about 60 ladies with the help of some 20 volunteers.
Hockey - Golf Day: Sports continue to be a wonderful vehicle in which to create communities for our leaders. We had over 40 pastors join us for our golf day in August, many playing with someone new to them - which we love.
We continue to host pick-up men's hockey on Friday afternoons. I cannot tell you how many of these have commented to me on how much they look forward to 1:00 pm on Fridays. It's a great time with lots of laughs, sweat, a few goals and just a super spirit. This year we had about 40 men signed up.
Partnerships - Arrow, The Master's Program, Ellel Ministries: One Way has always enjoyed working in partnership. We continue to do that particularly with Arrow Leadership Ministries, The Master's Program and Ellel Ministries. Let me tell you a little about each.
Our friendship with the folks at Arrow Leadership Ministries has been ongoing now for at least 10 years. We have recommended a number of leaders from the Ottawa and Toronto areas to the program. The program has turned out to be a transformational experience for most of them. It's a two-year experience that creates a safe environment where the real issues in the lives of a leader can be dealt with. And they do, over and over again.
My role with Arrow (apart from trying to get people into the program) is to journey with one of the classes and act as an on-site mentor for three people in that class. It's a wonderful privilege to see up close how the Lord changes and grows them. I also have been acting as Arrow's CFO - helping them with their budgeting and financially related issues during the year. They are a great team and I love this work.
The Master's Program is a relatively new ministry that is led by Chris and Karen Hornibrook out of Sherbrooke, Quebec. We have so enjoyed getting to know them and their heart for marketplace leaders.
Their program targets successful mid-life marketplace leaders and provides a process where they can thoughtfully and prayerfully explore what exactly is God's call on their life and how are they going to re-arrange their life in order to walk out that calling. Part of that process is to participate in a "dream masters weekend". This is a weekend when the leaders (and spouse if they are married) articulate what all their dreams are, look for overlaps and work towards seeing the dream fulfilled. Tracy and I participated in this weekend and we loved it. What was the dream that we came away with? Well, we had a couple but our big one is by 2013, we are planning to take our family to Southern Africa on a family mission trip. We are pretty excited about it!!
For this first class of the Masters Program the One Way team helped recruit an Ottawa class of about 15 people. A new class will be launched this summer - you may want to explore it. Let me know if you do.
Our other major partnership is with Ellel Ministries. Kent and Karen Bandy lead this ministry out near Westport, Ontario and we just love them.
Ellel Ministries is all about freedom. Their ministry helps people close the doors to the enemy and start walking in freedom. I could say so much about them. We have recommended many leaders to them and of those who have received ministry from Ellel, a number have experienced significant freedom in many different areas. We are so thankful to have a ministry like them close at hand and would highly recommend them to anyone.
Purpose at work conference: In July, Gerry Organ (our One Way rep who was in the Toronto area at that time) and his leadership team hosted a Purpose at Work Conference at Muskoka Bible Centre. In the setting of a family camp the guest speakers encouraged us to look at the workplace as an area of ministry and building the Kingdom. I really enjoyed Richard Blackaby's sessions as they were funny and very inspiring. DVD's are available for purchase.
Civic Prayer Breakfast: Under Gerry's encouragement and leadership our One Way team helped serve the leadership team of the first Civic Prayer Breakfast in Ottawa. We were thrilled to see well over 400 people in attendance.
Gerry has had involvement in a number of these breakfasts across Ontario and it is so good to see this one launched here in Ottawa. If you did not attend it, I'd encourage you to come to the next one this fall, October 21st.
Testimonies: I thought you might like to read portions of a couple of emails and letters we received in our office this year about our ministry.
For over ten years I was engaged in management for a financial institution. During that time, I participated in many leadership training activities. I have taken courses, read books, done 360's , etc., etc. Absolutely nothing I have participated in would hold a candle to what I experienced today. This process is transformational.
- Lynn Fraser, Mortgage Broker (after a Leader-to-Leader)
One Way has consistently displayed a remarkable ability to encourage Kingdom work with wisdom, discernment and just plain hard work. Arrow Leadership considers One Way a full partner with us, even to the point where their team and our team have established relationships serving one another. I know we are not the only ministry that One Way supports, but they make us feel like we are. Over the years, our partnering with One Way has enabled us to develop Christ-centered leaders for numerous ministries - many of whom you would know and support.
- Carson Pue, Arrow Leadership Ministries.
I have been blessed by various appreciation events in all kinds of venues where I have been treated in ways that refresh me and remind me that I am loved and valued by God. These are the types of things that help lift up the heads of pastors and ministry leaders when the going gets tough. In my early years when I was being trained as a pastor, One Way was willing to take a risk on me and send me to a leadership event in Atlanta. That was a time in my life where I was still discerning God's call. Being chosen to go to Atlanta as an emerging leader was deeply affirming and helped me gain even more confidence that I was on God's intended path for me.
- Kerry Kronberg, Pastor
Finances: Over the years we have been blessed with a single significant donor who has allowed our team to focus on ministry and serving leaders without having to worry about raising funds.
Over the next few years this commitment is going to be scaled back, which we all feel is a healthy transition. But we will need a number of significant partners in order to allow us to continue doing what we do. If you're interested in considering investing part of your portfolio of Kingdom investments in the lives of leaders please contact me so that we can meet for coffee and see if it might be a fit. Our current annual budget is $550,000.
Staff Update: In April of 2011, Gerry and Lore Organ moved back to Ottawa and settled in Greely. They are looking forward to re-engaging with the Ottawa scene after 25 years. Lore is an artist and hopes to continue that passion while Gerry will work closely with One Way staff, partner with Richard Long in City transformation and Prayer, and continue to build relationships with business, political and church leaders. Feel free to contact Gerry - he will enjoy sharing his heart and his calling with each of you.
We continue to serve Christians of all stripes throughout the city. One Way is a safe place, a place for prayer, a place to meet and a source for advice, connection and encouragement. Our place is a Kingdom place and we are inherently engaged in God's work to bring transformation to our city.
I want to thank all of you who invest your time, talent, touch and treasure with One Way Ministries. I count it a deep privilege to do what we do. We look forward to investing deeply into the lives of Kingdom leaders in the future.
Blessings!!
